about

Hibiscus is a brand new project from the Tel Aviv-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and video artist, Kutiman, in collaboration with Uri Brauner Kinrot - the guy behind Boom Pam and Ouzo Bazooka and Elran Dekel - musician, songwriter and lead singer of Funk'n'stein.

Hibiscus was born out of a series of spontaneous jam sessions held at Kutiman’s studio and took place in the Spring of 2012. The three skilled musicians, who came from different backgrounds, managed to come up with an exotic concoction which sounded like rare recordings from undiscovered far away places.

However, years later, Dekel revealed a set of recordings he had secretly made with a mobile phone that was concealed in his left pocket during the sessions. Blown away from the sounds of their own music, they immediately decided to revisit the sessions and develop them further. An overdub here, a little analogue audio wizardry there, the sessions were edited, manipulated and layered with random household objects such as a bowl of peanuts (reborn as a shaker), and a small chirping wooden frog, alongside saxophones and vintage keyboards.

This initial two-track EP from the all star trio appears to not only tip a hat to recent countless releases of rare music from all over the world , but also to the psychedelic, surf and funk scenes they are associated with. On “Boten” in particular, one can hear the almost dubbed-out traces of a lost Ennio Morricone soundtrack. Psychedelic guitars, haunting wordless voices, whistles, cosmic keyboards, and their relentless groove create a thick smoke to drift to.

Individually, Hibiscus members’ fame precedes them. Multi instrumentalist Ophir Kutiel has been releasing mind bending music under the name Kutiman and performing with his Orchestra for the past 12 years, and has released groundbreaking video music collages that have scorched the internet. He performed at the Gugenheim and earned a place on Time magazine’s list of best inventions of yesteryear.

Elran Dekel is the front man of Tel Aviv based international funk outfit Funkenstein and an active and veteran member of The Kutiman Orchestra. Uri Brauner Kinrot is the man behind the acclaimed psychedelic rock group Ouzo Bazooka and leader of mediterranean surf juggernauts Boom Pam, who are currently collaborating with Turkish psychedelic-folk legend Selda Bagcan.

Bringing in their own unique styles, and committing to hours of secretly recorded genre-floating jam sessions, The three wizards have created magic.
