Kutiman’s Tanzania-meets-psych-jazz album, ‘Wachaga”, released earlier this year, is an epic and incredibly uplifting work of art, blending traditional Tanzanian sounds with free jazz, psychedelia, afrobeat and soul. On ‘Wachaga in Dub’ we see Kutiman turn inward, amplifying the deepest sounds within the album’s standouts, in turn creating a far more psychedelic experience.

Born out of a profoundly affecting experience, following an invitation to collaborate with the Maasai & Wachaga nations in Tanzania, ‘Wachaga” has been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Uncut, Jamie Cullum, & The Wire. ‘Wachaga In Dub’ takes the original source material as a starting point and adds delay, reverb and phasers to elevate the music into new hallucinogenic heights. In the spirit of classic dub albums of the past, Kutiman selects and rearranges parts of the original songs to present them to listeners in a different light.

Opener “Maasai in Dub” extends the bass and drums intro from “Maasai”, accentuating its musical weight with some serious bass. Kutiman adds back snippets of the original vocals and keys, whilst adding plenty of reverb. As “Tanzania in Dub”, the almost country funk of “Tanzania”, enjoys a re-tuning of cosmic proportions, centered around a double bass groove that wouldn’t sound out-of-place on a Strata East record, with bass synths adding further texture.

“Copasavana in Dub” adds earth shaking drums, echo & filtering, and “Lost in Dub” welcomes a beautiful brand new keyboard solo. Closing proceedings, “Awake in Dub” enjoys a meditative treatment and a touch of almost Danny Breaks style synth bass to sweeten it.
